Rite of Betrothal

Betrothal, or betrothment, is a beautiful, ancient practice for those planning to marry in the Church. It is more solemn than an engagement, although the two may be seen as synonymous. Betrothal is, “a mutual promise of future marriage, or a contract by which a man and a woman engage themselves to marry.” 1

The general structure is this: the Rite of Betrothal takes places in a church, with a priest. Psalm 126 (RSV-CE 127) is chanted, followed by an allocution from the priest, a pledge between the couple, a reading from Tobias, a reading from the Gospel of John, and a final blessing.

Similar to the Rite of Marriage, the specifics of the Rite of Betrothal have not always been legislated consistently, but both are to be encouraged and are still available to the faithful for their use today.

Betrothment serves as a barrier against ill-omened haste; it renders the position of the engaged parties more secure; and it affords a better opportunity for bringing to light any impediments or incompatibility of disposition that may exist. It was in use among the Jews, the Romans, the Germans, and the Christians of the primitive Church. 1

The Rite of Betrothal

Psalm 126 (RSV-CE 127)

Priest: Unless the house be of the Lord’s building, in vain do the builders labor.

All: Unless the Lord be the guard of the city, in vain does the guard keep sentry.

P: It is futile that you rise before daybreak, to be astir in the midst of darkness,

All: You that eat the bread of hard labor, for He deals bountifully to His beloved while they are sleeping.

P: Behold, offspring come from God’s giving, a fruitful womb is the reward of His blessing.

All: Like arrows in the hand of the warrior are children begotten of a youthful father.

P: Happy the man who has filled with them his quiver; they shall uphold him in contending at the gate with his rival.

All: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

P: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

Allocution and Pledge

Beloved of Christ: It is in God’s designs that you are called to the holy vocation of matrimony. For this reason you present yourselves today before Christ and the Church, before His sacred minister and the people of God, to ratify in a formal manner your engagement. You are here to ask the blessing of God and of the Church on your proposal, and to ask the good prayers of the faithful here present. You realize that what has begun by the inspiration of your heavenly Father requires equally His grace to be brought to a happy conclusion. We trust that you have given serious and prayerful deliberation to your promise that you will one day be married. In the time that intervenes until your wedding day, may you prepare for the sacrament of matrimony by persevering in a virtuous life. Then, when the holy day arrives on which you will give yourselves irrevocably to each other, you will have laid a solid religious foundation for the many years you will spend together. These years will be filled with joy and peace as long as you wear the sweet yoke of Jesus Christ; if you remain faithful to Him, your love on earth will be perfected in the eternal wedding feast of heaven. May the union you purpose to consummate one day in Christian marriage be truly a sacramental image of the perfect union of Christ with His beloved bride, the Church.

Priest_:_ Join your right hands and plight your troth.

Man_:_ In the name of our Lord, I, [name], promise that I will one day take you, [name], for my wife, according to the ordinances of God and holy Church. I will love you as I love myself, and will sacrifice my life for you as Christ offered His life for His bride, the Church. I will keep faith with you and be loyal to you all the days of my life, and so aid you and comfort you in all your necessities. These things and all that a man ought to do for his espoused, I promise to do for you, and to keep the promise by the faith that is in me.

Woman_:_ In the name of our Lord, I, [name], promise that I will one day take you, [name], for my husband, according to the ordinances of God and holy Church. I will love you as I love myself, and will revere and honor you as my lord, even as the Church loves Christ her bridegroom. I will keep faith with you and be loyal to you all the days of my life, and so aid you and comfort you in all your necessities. These things and all that a woman ought to do for her espoused, I promise to do for you, and to keep the promise by the faith that is in me.

Then the priest takes the two ends of his stole and in the form of a cross places them over the clasped hands of the couple. Holding the stole in place with his left hand, he says:

I bear witness to your solemn proposal and I declare you engaged; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

As he pronounces the last words he sprinkles them with holy water in the form of a cross.

All: Amen.

Priest: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

All: Who made heaven and earth.

P: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with thy spirit.

Priest: Let us pray. Lord, reach out Thy right hand to Thy faithful servants, that they may seek Thee wholeheartedly and receive from Thee all the good things they desire. Almighty everlasting God, look kindly on Thy servants who have come to Thy holy sanctuary with glad hearts to make known their promise; grant they they, whose only trust is in Thee, may be filled with Thy grace, may live together in the bond of charity on this earth, and may finally attain the joys of everlasting life, through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Reading from Tobias

(ch. 7, vv. 10, 12, 15–17; ch. 8, vv. 4–10)

Tobias said: “I will not eat nor drink here this day, unless thou first grant me my petition, and promise to give me Sara thy daughter.” The angel said to Raguel: “Be not afraid to give her to this man, for to him who feareth God is thy daughter due to be his wife; therefore another could not have her.” And taking the right hand of his daughter, Raguel gave it into the right hand of Tobias, saying: “The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, be with you. And may he join you together, and fulfill His blessing in you.” And taking paper they made a writing of the marriage. And afterwards they made merry, blessing God. . . . Then Tobias exhorted the virgin, and said to her: “Sarah, arise, and let us pray to God today, and tomorrow, and the next day: because for these three nights we are joined to God. And when the third night is over, we will be in our own wedlock. For we are the children of saints: and we must not be joined together like heathens that know not God.” So they both arose, and prayed earnestly both together that healthy might be given them. And Tobias said: “Lord God of our fathers, may the heavens and the earth, and the sea, and the fountains, and the rivers, and all thy creatures that are in them, bless Thee. Thou madest Adam of the slime of the earth, and gavest him Eve for a helper. And now, Lord, Thou knowest that not for fleshly lust do I take my sister to wife, but only for the love of posterity, in which Thy name be blessed for ever and ever.” Sara also said: “Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us: and let us grow old both together in health.”

Reading from John

(ch. 15, vv. 4–17)

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: “Abide in me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit; for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither; and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you. In this is my Father glorified: that you bring forth very much fruit and become my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; as I also have kept my Father’s commandments and do abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be filled. This is my commandment: that you love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do the things that I command you. I will not now call you servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doth. But I have called you friends, because all things whatsoever I have heard of my Father, I have made known to you. You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and have appointed you, that you should go and should bring forth fruit, and your fruit should remain, that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name he may give it you. These things I command you, that you love one another.”

Final blessing

Lastly, the priest extends his hands over the heads of the couple and prays:

May God bless your bodies and your souls. May he shed His blessing on you as He blessed Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. May the hand of the Lord be upon you. May He send His holy angel to guard you all the days of your life. Amen. Go in peace.
